Ymittos, Panorama at Voula 21 May

This is a new walk. We get 270 degree views of the Saronic Gulf, Athens all the way to Spata from our vantage points between Panorama and Voula on this 8.5 km walk at the end of the Ymittos mountain range. We start at 3:00 pm at the Voula Cemetery and proceed to wind up and down the foot hills covered in new growth pine. Along the way we stop by the sacred cave of Nympholyptou and those who have acrobatic skills may want to descend a narrow set of slippery stone stairs into this small but impressive cave with carvings from the 3rd century BC! For more information regarding the cave please open the following website https://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=19268.

Coming by Car

You need to find yourself on Leoforos (avenue) Vouliagmenis. This is a very long avenue, starting at the junction with Kallirois street, in the centre of Athens, very near Zappion. The avenue passes the Metro station of Agios Dimitrios, the junction with Leoforos Alimou and then a big Praktiker store on your right. You will also meet this junction with Praktiker, if you are coming from Kareas on Leoforos Katechaki-Alimou, starting from the junction with Leoforos Messogion. Zero your odometer as you drive past Praktiker. At 1.3 km you see a big red and white checkered water tank standing above the ground, on your right. At 3.6 km you pass a Pet City shop on your right. At 6.0 km you reach traffic lights. You turn left here. There is a Sklavenitis super market at this junction, on your right, but you may not see it. Also, there is a small blue and white road sign indicating the left turn to ‘Panorama’ on your right, just before the traffic lights. Just after your left turn at the traffic lights, the road splits in two. You follow the path to the right, on Dervenakion Street. The road climbs up Ymittos Mountain. If in any doubt at any point, ask any pedestrian for the way to the Voula cemetery. At 6.7 km take a right turn then a quick left turn into Ymittou Street. This climbs up for a few km and reaches Voula cemetery at 9.6 km. The cemetery is on your right. There are many parking spaces on your left. We meet outside the cemetery.  Midway there you will cross a tiny green ravine before starting the climb up the mountain side to the Cemetery.

By Mass Transit

Take the Metro Line Ag. Antonios – Ag. Dimitrios to the latter end station and go forward up the stairs to the right as you exit the train.

Turn right as you come to the ticket hall and go up the stair to the bus stations towards Voula.

Take the 154 bus 37 stops to Plateia Alsous on Zakynthou street.

Get on bus 162 across the street on Proodou street.

Get down after 2 stations at ΣΜΟΛΙΚΑ (Smolika) stop. Walk 950m up the hill (13 minutes) following the signs to the cemetery up Ymittou Street. It is much better to simply walk all the way up Ymittou street to the cemetery since the bus 162 runs infrequently. You may meet other Strollers driving along, who will be looking for you along the way.

The Taverna

After the walk we shall dine at ‘Steki kalamaki’ souvlakia diner. This is at number 14, Poseidonos street in downtown Voula, on the central square of Voula. Telephone 2108996080. Note the area is difficult for parking. Hence, you are advised to park anywhere near, on Agiou Ioannou street (this is the first parallel to Poseidonos) or on Zefirou street (this is the second parallel to Poseidonos)

Driving from the walk finish to the taverna

You need to drive down to the traffic lights junction on Leoforos Vouliagmenis, from where you came up. You see a Sklavenitis super market facing you at the traffic lights. Cross Leoforos Vouliagmenis at the traffic lights and go straight.

If you prefer, stay close to the walk leader, and ask to drive along in a convoy, from the walk finish.
