Athens Strollers – Challenging hike around Vouliagmeni lake and foothills beyond

Saturday October 6 2012 @ 15:00

This is a newly discovered walk on the peninsula between Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, bathed in a sea breeze and with constant panoramic views of theSaronic Gulf. It is led by Marc who can be found at 6932602902.

We will start at 15:00 from the free parking to the left of Vouliagmeni lake entrance. From there we ascend a steep rocky path to the top of the lake cliffs where there are commanding views of it, as well as all of Vouliagmeni village. We continue on a variety of paths amongst scrub brush and few pines and eucalyptus trees. There are several off-road steep climbs and down hills but the remainder of the journey is on well-groomed fire roads and a small bit of asphalt towards the end as we descend downhill back towards the village. This is a STRENUOUS walk at times, with very little shade so a brimmed hat is highly recommended.

Due to the loose rocks combined with steep inclines, please bring walking sticks and good hiking shoes with ankle support.

This walk is tailored for those who enjoy using mass transit so please give yourselves a little extra time and come by bus to protect the environment and avoid the stress of Saturday beach traffic.

By Bus – Take the E22 from Panepistimeo, Syntagma or Fix metro stations. This takes us up Syngrou avenue and along Poseidonos street to the LIMNI stop. Travel time around 1 hour. This is also the stop for buses 114, 115 and 170. Get down at the seaside and cross over the road at the traffic light to where we will be waiting for you in the open free parking to the left of the lake entrance.

By Car – Drive along Poseidonos or Vouliagmenis streets towards Sounion. At the junction of these two roads, set your odometer to 0.0. At 3.3km you will arrive at the end of the lush green landscape of Vouliagmeni village. There is a traffic light coinciding with the entrance to the lake on the left. You must turn right into the turn out and wait at the traffic light to cross the road into the parking. Do not descend into the lake entrance. Take the left entrance into the open free parking. We will be waiting for you there. For mapped directions go here https://tinyurl.com/8rf2sun

After the walk we shall have a meal. Our restaurant is on the way as we finish our walk so there is no need to jump into our cars to access the venue. A bus stop for the express back to Athens is located meters from the restaurant.

The restaurant is Zahos Grill (2108960352) on Ermou 1.
