Palaio Psychico – Tourkovounia, Sunday 22 Jan.

You are invited to come for a walk on Sunday, January 22, 2012 on the hill between Psychico and Galatsi, commonly referred to as Tourkovounia. This is not the usual hike that we have done just above Kypseli; this hike is up through the central hill of Tourkovounia that weaves thru the remains of an old quarry, with some lovely views of the surrounding mountains and a pleasant surprise that you might not expect in the middle of a city. The terrain is dirt paths over some uneven ground.
We will start the walk at 12 noon. It will take approximately 1.5 hours and will go ahead even in light rain. The walk is being organized by Heather and Anna. If you need to contact them, their numbers are 697 376 6244 and 693 427 0994 respectively.

How to get to the Walk

Coming by car

If coming from the North or South you will need to get yourselves to the corner of Kiffissias and Katehaki Avenue, near the suburb of Psychico and Lito Maternity Hospital.

If coming from the North along Kiffissias Avenue, you will not go thru the underpass but will follow the slip road along ground level so that you will be able to make a right hand turn at the Katehaki junction.

If coming from the South along Kiffisias Avenue, you will not go thru the underpass but will follow the slip road to the right at ground level so that you can turn left at the Katehaki junction.

If coming from the South from Alimos and Katehaki Avenue into Athens just carry on straight across the junction.

Just after the Katehaki junction BEFORE Lito Hospital, which is on the left, there is a road leading off to the right called Vasileos Pavlou. Take this road. Keep following this road, straight thru a roundabout and you will come to a junction where you cannot go straight. This cross street is Dimokratias Avenue. Turn left here and carry on until you see a church on your left. This is Agios Dimitrios, where the walk will begin. It is best if you try to find parking along this road. There is a small park to the right of the church. We will meet at the top right corner of the park as you look uphill in front of the church. The meeting point is just across the street from the 653 bus stop named Ntamaria (meaning quarry).

Coming by Bus
Take the Metro to Ampelokipi and walk to Kiffisias Avenue. Take the 653 which begins here towards Psychico. The bus will turn into Psychico at the Katehaki junction. Get off at 20th stop called Ntamaria (meaning quarry). This is on a street called Eli. Athanasiadou, which is just behind the church, Agios Dimitrios, which is our starting point. Do not walk any further as this bus stop is just across the street from the meeting point.

After the walk we can go off to a nearby bakery/café called Apollonia. It is located in the area known as the Nea Agora on the street 28th of October near the crossroads with Dafnis Street.
