On Sunday 11 September, the eve of the full moon, the moon will rise bright and big over the horizon @ 18:54 and the Athens Strollers will be on their way to a sandy beach near the old airport when it does. Marc is the walk leader; if needed, call him on 6932602902.
We will meet at 18:15 in Flisvos Marina (Trocadero tram stop) for a 2- hour, 6 km walk and take in the full moon while feasting on picnic dinners on a beach in Alimos.
WALK DESCRIPTION: @ 18:30 starting at the Flisvos Marina we walk through the newly built entertainment facility and past several amazing mega yachts. Here you will be able to purchase last minute sandwiches for the picnic. Exiting, we continue south east down along the Mediterranean coast on the pedestrian route passing through several other marinas and public park areas. Occasionally, we will need to cut through the parking areas of the marinas. At the end of the walk we detour through the Athens Olympic Practicing grounds and culminate our journey at the sandy beach of ‘Dimotiki Plage Ellinikou’ where we will have a perfect view of the moon rising over the unfettered horizon of theSaronic gulf.
When we finish (the time is up to you), we will return by TRAM to our starting point. The good thing about this walk is that if you come late you can catch up with us, stopping at any of the several TRAM stops along the way. The tram works 24 hours on the weekend so you can come or go whenever you like. Afterwards, some of us may walk to the go-kart facility nearby, for a spin around the track.
Recommended that one brings picnic food including possibly sandwiches, fruit and anything else, in a well sealed tupper. Caviar and champagne are optional. A light blanket may be handy if you don’t wish sand in your sandwich. Bathing towels and swim suits are also optional. There will be no place to purchase food at our final destination.
How to get to the starting point
BY CAR FROM ATHENS: Drive up Syngrou Avenue and at the end go in the direction Faliro/Glyfada . After passing 2 signals turn right at the ‘Flisvos Marina’. You will see the pedestrian entrance, and our meeting point, directly in front of you after turning. Park your car somewhere there and return to the meeting point.
BYCARONPOSEIDONOS: Depending on which direction you come on the coastal route you will find a convenient signaled intersection at the entrance to the Flisvos Marina. When you make the turn towards the sea at this intersection you will find our meeting place directly in front of you. It is the pedestrian entrance to ‘Flisvos Marina’.
BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: As always we highly recommend you leave your cars behind and use our wonderful mass transit system.
TRAM: The Trocadero tram stop is where we will be. The tram is best accessed from the Irene Electric train station or the Neos Kosmos Metro station (tram direction SEF stadium).
BUS: B2 passes the Akadimias, Syntagma and Fix METRO station and is slightly quicker than the TRAM. Get down at the Trocadero bus stop.
