Dotty’s Love Walk, February 11, 2012 @ Marathon Lake and the Church of Agia Triada.
Prepare for the upcoming Valentine’s Day with this tranquil stroll by the calm waters of Marathon Reservoir. We gather at the isolated mountain church of Agia Triada at 2:00 pm. Everyone attending this walk is requested to bring a flower to exchange. Dorothy is leading this walk, which will go ahead even in light rain. If you need to, call Dorothy on 6937470875. This is a fairly easy walk which will take around two and a half hours to complete and involves just a couple of uphill sections. We rate this one ‘Moderate’, good for a wintery Saturday afternoon. The scenery along the route is varied and includes forest paths, open fields and a large section which follows the shore of the lake for more than 45 minutes. Keen birdwatchers should bring their binoculars as there is a wide variety of birdlife in this area including egrets, herons and other water birds. At this time of the year, parts of the trail will be wet underfoot, so sensible footwear is advisable. We will experience peaceful landscapes seemingly distant from civilization, and the mysterious Rumbling Well, submerged manmade structures due to the swollen reservoir.
Directions to the start of the walk:
From Agios Stephanos suburb take the road which goes to Marathon Lake (signposts in the town direct you to both the lake and the dam). Just over 3km after Agios Stefanos you pass a turning on your right signposted to Stamata and about 300 metres after this turning there is a small road on your left with a sign to the church of Agia Triada. Turn left into this road and follow it for about 1km ignoring any tracks leading off to the right. Eventually you come to the church of Agia Triada, which you can see on your right. Drive up towards the church and park in the open area before it.
Here is some more detailed description on how to find the road to Marathon. Drive along the principal road getting out of Kifissia, northbound. You will pass the suburbs of Nea Erythrea, Ekali, Drossia, to reach Anixi. Zero your odometer as you pass Sklavenitis super market on your left hand side, in Anixis. At 0.7 km turn right, into Marathonos street, to get to Lake Marathon. There is a road sign before, showing “Marathon, Agios Stephanos”. Caution: if you have missed the correct right turn, you pass a bridge, over the rail line, just after. If you have reached this far, you need to turn back.
Coming from the Athens-Lamia National Road (Ethniki Odos):
Get to the exit of Agios Stephanos-Kryoneri. Drive in the direction of Agios Stephanos, towards the suburb of Anixi. Well before Anixi, you will pass the junction where traffic turns left into Trapezountos street, for “Kalamos, Kapandriti”. Stay on the principal road. 200 meters after, you pass the junction where traffic turns left, into Iroon Polytechneiou street, to go to Agios Stephanos village centre. You ignore this turn as well. Just after, you pass a bridge, over the rail line. About 50 meters after, turn left, into Marathonos street, to get to Lake Marathon. There is a road sign before, showing “Marathon, Agios Stephanos”.
After the walk we will have a meal at the taverna Pipinios, on top of Stamata square. We will drive there in a convoy.
