Holargos – Ymittos climb, Sat. 28 Jan.

On Saturday 28th January, join the Athens Strollers walking up Ymittos. Carol and Joe are our walk leaders and the walk starts at 2.00 p.m. The duration of the walk with stops is approximately 2.5 hours. The walk will go ahead even in light rain. If you need to contact Carol, call 6944240222.

Although the walk doesn’t involve any scrambling, it is strenuous and includes a number of steep uphill paths. It is ideal for fit strollers who enjoy challenging uphill walks. We start at the back of the suburbs of Holargos/ Agia Paraskevi and walk uphill on a dirt track, crossing under the Ymittos ring road and then climbing further up on a number of tree lined foot paths before making our descent, using other footpaths, down the mountain back to the cars.

How to get to the start of the walk

From the northern suburbs: get yourself to Messogeion Avenue. Follow Messogeion down towards Athens. Go straight at the traffic lights going into Agia Paraskevi square. After the Agia Paraskevi junction, you go through traffic lights with a Marfin Egnatia bank on your right hand side. Look out for the Ford Showroom and turn left at the next set of lights (landmark on your right-BP garage). You are now in Ipirou street (ΟΔΟΣ ΗΠΕΙΡΟΥ). Turn first right into El. Venizelou street (ΟΔΟΣ ΕΛ. ΒΕΝΙΖΕΛΟΥ), drive up this road going through pedestrian lights followed by a set of traffic lights. Keep on this road; at one point the road narrows, you pass a ‘Market In’ super market and continue to the end of the road. Turn right and after 70 meters, turn right again, to get to the start of the walk (Karaoli and Dimitriou street).

From the centre of Athens and southern suburbs: get yourself to Messogeion Avenue going in the direction of the airport. Pass Sotiria (ΣΩΤΗΡΙΑ) Hospital, then Geniko (ΓΕΝΙΚΟ ΚΡΑΤΙΚΟ) Hospital, followed by Ethniki Amina metro station. These are all on your right hand side. After passing the metro station, the next landmark is 2 high rise flats on your left hand side. Look out for another hospital, IASO, followed by 2 large blue signs ‘Autoplus’, 1 on each side of the road. Then turn right at the next set of traffic lights into 17 November street (17ης ΝΟΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ). Go straight up this road; pass a school on your right and just after, you will see a roundabout. Look for the Lanterna Taverna and keeping the taverna on your left hand side and the square on your left (Doiranis street, ΟΔΟΣ ΔΟΙΡΑΝΗΣ) drive up to the traffic lights. There you turn left, followed by a right turn. Go straight (don’t turn left with the traffic) and you will find us at the end of the road (Karaoli and Dimitriou street).

By public transport: Catch the 416 bus from Ethniki Amina metro station. Get off at the terminus. Look for the Lanterna Taverna and go left, keeping the taverna on your right hand side. Walk up Mykonou street (ΟΔΟΣ ΜΥΚΟΝΟΥ), the road bends a bit and changes to Karaoli and Dimitriou street (ΟΔΟΣ ΚΑΡΑΟΛΗ ΚΑΙ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ). The meeting point is at the end of this road.

Taverna: After the walk, we will eat at the Lanterna Taverna. We will drive there in a convoy.
