TREKKING IN THE SPECTACULAR GOURA GORGE ON MT. PARNITHA
On Sunday the 5th of March at 10.30 a.m. we will meet each other at Kliston Monastery ( Moni Kleiston ) near Fili village for a … double hike in west Parnitha with the aim to reach the bottom riverbed of the impressive ‘‘ Goura ’’ Gorge and visit the mysterious “ Panos ” Cave.
Actually, our team will be divided in two parts. One will stop at the cave, after having crossed the gorge, and will return back the same way up to the starting point. The whole is a 5 – 6 hours hike with a difficulty grade of medium, because we have to descend to the rocky base of the canyon very carefully using, in parts, legs and … hands ! Rest of the route is an easy trekking in a clear path without significant height differences mostly through pine forest and bushes fields.
The other part of the team, the most experienced hikers, will continue, after visiting the Cave, to the other side of the gorge climbing up a, 10m high, rock using a stable rope..! and finally return to the starting point from another path in a meaning of a circle way. Total duration will be 7 hours approximately, so the difficulty grade is hard.
As we have to descend to the stony base of the Gorge, good trekking boots are highly recommended. In any case, don’t forget your raincoat and for the second team a head-torch maybe is useful ..!
There is one spring, only in the second section of the route, but plenty of drinking water runs along the gorge, so you’ll have the chance to taste it ..!
Lunch or light meal could take place at one of the many pick-nick areas along the trail.
For those who don’t like to risk … the descent into the Gorge , there is a third chance and this is to stop some meters before the descent and wait, one hour approximately, the others to come back, while having their pick-nick lunch at a beautiful plateau. In this case, the hike is an easy one.
Meeting point is at the outer entrance of the Monastery. From central square of Fili village continue driving straight on for 2.7 km, you reach a junction, ignore the left fork, drive another 1.1 km straight on and here you are.
If you are interested in participating, please declare up to 4th mid-day. Leader for the whole trek will be Georgos Foteinos, e-mail geoplanf@otenet.gr Emergency phone 6945 386255, and Hetty Schuppert will be the leader for the first part.
