SCHINIAS, Cynosoura peninsula and the wetlands

SCHINIAS, Cynosoura peninsula and the wetlands

On Saturday the 11th of November at 11:00 a.m., SAS organize a combination of walk and relax … hiking in Schinias’ National Park. The walk will take place through a dense Pine forest on a sandy path-net, thick in parts, parallel to the seashore, the only forest in Attica with stone pines, which called locally ‘‘ Dasos Koukounarias ’’.

At the end of the forest extends the Cynosoura Peninsula with the strangest shape of land we’ll have ever seen. It’s like the tail of a lizard that tries to escape from the dip waters or it looks like a snake that is ready to … dip into the blue crystal waters !! From the highest point, 92 m … above sea level, there is a unique view to the surrounding coasts and islets. Drakonera hill is high above the peninsula across it. Will not … visit this last hill ! Duration of this walk will be 4 hours approximately, total distance covered will be 12 km again approximately and because the terrain is mostly flat with no significant height differences, the difficulty could be considered as medium !

Taverna ‘‘ The Paradise ’’ is waiting for us, 20 minutes before the end of the walk for a real … heavenly meal !

Meeting point is at ‘‘ Moraitis beach club ’’, 210 Posidonos avenue, where we could take a … slow-drinking morning coffee under the shadow of Palm trees and the sounds of Alexandros’ jazz music … !

Big surprise : We are happy to announce that something unusually pleasant will take place in this walk. Evangelia Marougka, a recently registered member of SAS, will help us … double to relax, introducing us in the Sensorial Movement method Danis Bois, just before the beginning, also during the walk and why not after the big meal .. !

As you drive on Souliou avenue, turn right on Schinias avenue at the traffic light ( there is also a sign for the Olympic Rowing Complex ), then drive for 2 km and just before the left bend where other traffic lights are, turn right then continue only for 100 meters, U-turn to the left and immediately after 30 meters turn right at the sign ‘‘ Moraitis beach ’’. There is a safe park here.

Unexpectedly, there is also a bus line from Athens ( Platia Egyptou, Pedion Areos ) to Schinias but is a long journey, maybe half the duration of the walk !

If you are interested in participating, please declare up to 9th  22:00. Leaders will be Georgos and Anna Foteinou, e-mail geoplanf@otenet.gr Emergency phone 6945 386255.

Important notice : Keep in mind that if you participate in an Athens Strollers and Hikers walk or hike, you do so for your fun and your pleasure at one hand but entirely at your own risk at the other. The Athens Strollers and Hikers is an internet social club and neither the organizers nor the leader are responsible for the safety of those taking part. Wish you a nice Saturday walk !

Georgos and Anna

ATTENTION : Firstly Schinias’ walk had been included in the Autumn 2017 program on Sunday the 12th of November, but because of the famous Marathon running at the same day, we are forced to change the date at the above, Saturday the 11th.

We’ d like to inform you that between the participants will be Sofia Papaioannou, professor of the Athens University, who will give a 15 minutes lecture about the famous battle of Marathonas, which took place exactly in the area we will walk … !

We’d like also to remind you that another Athens Strollers member, Evangelia Marougka, is going to … relax us, by introducing us in the Sensorial Movement method Danis Bois, just before the beginning and during the walk !

Below you will find more information about Evangelia’s activity.

See you all there on Saturday morning !

About Somato-psycopedagogy (Somatic – psychoeducation) Perceptual Pedagogy

“Somatic-psychoeducation is a learning approach that is mainly body-centered. Though it uses protocols that are therapeutic, their function is not simply to heal the body’s ailments, or through the body to heal psychological suffering. They offer the pretext to reflect on life, to draw meaning from life and thus to engage in a process of transformation.”

Danis Bois

Somatic-psychoeducation considers that all human beings carry within a unique potential for growth and the possibility of renewal during our entire lifetime.

Explaining the name:

‘Somatic’ for the body, because one learns to refine his/her sensory perception.

Somatic-psycho’ because it stimulates the body-mind link and emphasizes on their inseparable interaction by

  1. a) inviting the person to nourish any reflection on the information emerging from the body,
  2. b) allowing the person to recognize and take into account the effects of his/her thought on one’s own body.

‘Somatic-psychoeducation’ because it is a learning process, is a method which invites the individual to learn from his/ herself.

The approach is based on the unique experience of the body offered during the sessions. It aims to:

 relieve physical pain and psychological suffering

 develop perceptual abilities and expression

 stimulate a process of learning and reflection which is based on experiencing the body’s feeling and sensing dimension in a fuller way

As well as relieving pain and suffering, the objective is to enrich the relationship one has with oneself, others and the environment, as a means of helping the individual deal with the physical, psychological or emotional difficulties in his/her daily life. This approach also provides support when undergoing a major life change or seeking to regain the meaning of life. It is a very effective methodology to accompany those wishing to engage in a personal transformation process.

The benefits

The development of the capacity to perceive with the senses, particularly the kinaesthetic sense, is at the heart of this process. As you discover the subtle sensations of your living sensing body, you reconnect with it and deepen the way you relate to it. Awareness of the tangible link between the body and the mind increases which allows you to reclaim your body as a sensitive partner participating in all aspects of your life and to draw learning and meaning from this inner-experience.

You have re-established a real dialogue between your body and your mind, which brings you a feeling of grounding and wholeness. Your sense of self is enhanced and you gain stability in the face of life’s daily challenges. You are better able to perceive the effects of your relationship with others and your environment, and to find solutions for the difficulties you are encountering because you are looking at them from different perspectives which offer new possibilities.

A new way of being emerges which expresses itself in action. You are becoming the conscious actor of your own life. In fact, it may be that, for the first time in your life, you begin to lead on the outside the life of the person you really are on the inside.

In short: you begin to feel differently, think differently and behave differently.

The ‘tools’

Somatic-psychoeducation combines various modalities:

touch : to release tensions, re-activate and re-harmonize the flow of the sensorial movement within the body, and begin the process of body awareness

movement : to re-educate gestural movement, to develop feeling of wholeness and coherence in motion, to increase body awareness and presence, to explore action and expression (this gestural movement approach is called sensorial training

sensory introspection : a meditative invitation to tune in to the living body, to learn to listen to the silence and to feel the sensorial movement within.

body-centered dialogue : to put into words what has been experienced during the session as a way to increase perceptual awareness, to learn to recognize sensations and to draw the meaning contained in the experience.

Diary: writing of the thoughts, experiences, realizations that occurred while using any of the other tools or after, induces the person to further reflect and to validate his/ her own changes in a conscious manner in order to incorporate them in everyday living.

It addresses to those who deal with the following:

 tension, stress, exhaustion, malaise, depressive states (all these are accompanied by vague ailments which are not necessarily thought of as related to each other such as sleep and appetite disturbance, lack of attention, concentration or coordination)

 physical pain and illness, and their psychological impact (disturbance of body image, dealing with physical impairment, heavy medical treatments)

 the stress and difficulty of dealing with major life changes (grief, professional difficulties, divorce)

 modifying body perception, thus helping those experiencing body image difficulties

 age-related disorders

 support for people at the end of their life

 the development of body presence for artistic expression

 support in a personal transformation process
